General information

This unique cycling tour with up to 400 participants from all over the world will lead us from Gothenburg to Hamburg.
We offer a broad range of services to provide you a very special experience. Even not well trained cyclists could manage to ride the daily distances. And if you really need to finish a stage earlier, our pickup service will bring you and your bike to the daily destination.

The mixture of different languages, nationalities and cultures creates the special GBI spirit. And even GBI rookies will perceive this spirit not later than the second day.

Let's inspire you and cycle with us through Europe. You will love it!!!

A detailed description can be found here:

Track 1

Recommended for all kinds of bikes including road bikes. Only paved roads on the track. Shorter and less challenging than track 2.

Track 2

Recommended in particular for road bikes, the distance is longer and more climb than on track 1.

Day 1: Gothenburg (S) - Varberg (S)

After the official tour start we are cycling through the city of Gothenburg. We pass Haga, the oldest part of Gothenburg with many lovely cafés and we cycle through Slottsskogen, the largest park in Gothenburg. As soon as we left the city the Kattegattleden cycling route will be our guide for the next three days while we travel through southern Sweden. This cycling route has a perfect infrastructure and typically we cycle apart from the streets on particular cycle tracks.
After a short while we will see the ocean for the first time, but from now on it will be our permanent companion, offering many beautiful views of the sea.
At km 40 we reach Kungsbacka, the first larger city on our stage and not far away the nutrition point is waiting with refreshments close to a beautiful lake. Track 2 crosses the peninsula of Onsala before it reaches the nutrition stop.
The cozy village of Åsa, located at the coast, is great for a last stop before we head toward our destination of the day in Varbert. You will find a lot of shopping and dining in Varberg, but you should also visit the Kallbadhus on a pier and the fortification Varbergs Fästning.

Day 2: Varberg (S) - Halmstad (S)

Todays stage starts with a small sightseeing tour around Varbergs Fästning at the sea side and with a great view of the impressive site. We cycle on the beach promenade toward Apelviken, which has a popular beach, especially for wind surfers. The fisherman's village of Träslövsläge with its rustic wooden houses and the picturesque fishing harbour offers perfect swedish idyll. Always close to the coast we cycle to Falkenberg, the next large city on our route. We are guided through the old town of Gamla Stan and cross the river on the famous stone bridge Tullbron. In Skrea there is a very nice sandy beach with restaurants, offering a plunge into the sea. A short distance later you will have a spectacular panoraman view from the Smörkullen, a 52 m hill beneath the street. Several nice cafés and restaurants on our way shortens the distance to Halmstad, our final stopp today. In Tylösand, some kilometers before we reach Halmstad, you can rest a last time at the beach for today.
Track 2 leads from Varberg directly to the green backland with idyllic forests and blue lakes. At the nutrition point behind Falkenberg, both tracks unite.

Day 3: Halmstad (S) - Helsingor (DK)

We leave Halmstad to the south and again follow the well-known Kattegattleden cycling route, again with many coastal sections. At km 26 we reach Mellbystrand with the longest sandy beach of Sweden and a good infrastructure. Behind Båstad  there is the only considerable hill, the top of the tour. We have to climb incredible 156 m to the top, but as a reward the nutrition point is not far away. In Ängelholm there is a last beach stop option for today, and then we will head towards Helsingborg. From a distance the famous landmark of the city, the tower of Kärnan, is visible. We cycle through the city and to the ferry harbour, where we board onto the ferry to Denmark. A short while later we debark in Helsingør, and from here it is only short way to our camp at the harbour. A must-see is castle Kronborg, well-known as the Hamlet castle of Shakespeare.
Track 2 leads through the rugged, but beautiful Kullen peninsula. You should do the detour to Kullens Fyr, the famous light house at Cap Kullen, with mighty cliffs and a great panorama view.

Day 4: Helsingør (DK) - Køge (DK)

From Helsingør we will cycle almost 40 km very close to the Öresund strait. Later we reach Copenhagen, the danish capital, well known for its perfect cycling infrastructure. On our way through the city there are many places of interest. One of the most famous monuments is the little mermaid (Lille Havfrue), the town's landmark. Due to the touristic crowds here you should better walk the bike. We pass several interesting buildings like the Kastellet, castle Amalienborg and castle Christiansborg. You should use your time in Copenhagen and just stroll through the streets or sit in a small café and enjoy the atmosphere. The distance to todays destination in Køge is only 40 more kilometers and we cycle always close to the Køge bay with some picturesque fishing harbours.

Day 5: Køge (DK) - Maribo (DK)

Today we will see the beauty of the danish islands. At the days start we cross the island of Sjælland. Only the first couple of kilometers we have to follow a main road, later we will travel on minor roads and could enjoy the idyllic scenery. Track 2 makes a detour to Ringsted and Næstved and unites at the nutrition point with track 1.
Behind Vordingborg we cross a bridge to the small island of Masnedø and later we cross another (longer) bridge to the island of Falster. Always having the typical island landscape around us, we cycle to the island of Lolland. In the middle of the island, located at a beautiful lake, the city of Maribo is our destination of the day.

Day 6: Maribo (DK) - Lübeck (D)

Due to the ferry travel and the long stage distance it is advised to start early. We cycle on direct way to the ferry harbour Rødbyhavn, where we embarkt to the ferry to Fehmarn. After a 45 minutes ferry trip we debark in Puttgarden in Germany. We cross the island of Fehmarn with its nice village of Burg and cross the Fehmarnsund bridge. Todays nutrition point is located in Oldenburg in Holstein. Via Neustadt and Bad Schwartau we reach Lübeck and the GBI camp after a long day in the saddle.
Track 2 detours from Oldenburg to the Greater Plön Lake and to Eutin, before we reach Lübeck.

Day 7: Lübeck (D) - Hamburg (D)

At the last day we do some sightseeing first. We cycle through the Burgtor into the inner city of Lübeck. We pass several points of interest, most well known the famous Holstentor. After leaving Lübeck, we cycle on minor roads through the countryside and reach Ahrensburg and later finish up at the Museumsdorf Volksdorf, where we gather for the final group cycling.
Together will all GBI cyclists we start for the short 15 kilometer group cycling to the tour finish in the north of Hamburg. The traditional welcome party with donation cheque handover and announcement of the GBI Europe 2019 track indicates the official closing of this years' GBI Europe tour.

This sounds like a successful day!! Average speed is planed around 22km/h. After 2/3 of the daily stage we will have a lunch break for 45 – 60 minutes. If necessary we will stop more often, but not to take a picture every few minutes. We will stay together for the whole day, we leave no man behind. We will cycle on track 1b therefore race bikes are preferred. Everyone is welcome, a international team would be great.
